Chapter 1: The Hundred-Million-Dollar Lie 027

“Emily, has Mark ever threatened you physically?”

“He grabbed my wrist.”

“Anything else?”

“He knows where I am.”

“How?”

I explained the shared cloud account.

She advised me to preserve evidence of the account access while taking steps, with professional help, to secure my devices and communications.

By that evening, I’d changed passwords, separated my accounts, and stopped using the old laptop.

I bought a basic replacement phone.

For the first time in years, Mark couldn’t track my movements through the systems he controlled.

It should have made me feel free.

Instead, it made me realize how closely he’d been watching.

A week later, Vanessa disappeared.

She failed to attend a scheduled meeting with Miriam.

Her phone went straight to voicemail.

Messages went unanswered.

I became frightened when the manager at Elm Street Market said she’d requested several days off without explanation.

Then Mark called.

I’d blocked his usual number, but he reached me through the hotel’s front desk.
