“Why?”
“He said they concerned a family matter.”
“What family matter?”
“I don’t know.”
I studied her.
“You’re lying.”
She looked at me.
For the first time, I saw genuine fear.
“Emily, I’ve done terrible things.
I won’t pretend otherwise.
But whatever is in that box, Mark is more afraid of it than he is of the financial investigation.”
She stood abruptly.
“I need my own lawyer.”
Before leaving, she turned back.
“One thing you should know.”
I waited.
“Mark kept an old brass key on his office ring.
It opened a cabinet in the original transport building.
He wouldn’t let anyone use it.”
“Where is that cabinet?”
“The building is being sold.
Most of the contents have already been removed.”
“What’s inside?”
She shook her head.
“But whenever he thought someone had discovered his records, that cabinet was the first thing he checked.”
