Chapter 1: The Hundred-Million-Dollar Lie 027

After Celeste left, Miriam contacted Detective Sloane with the information.

Investigators were already examining the old transport building through authorized procedures.

The brass-key cabinet became part of that work.

Meanwhile, our divorce case moved forward.

Mark refused to cooperate.

He disputed the authenticity of several records.

He claimed the lottery ticket was marital property and accused me of concealing assets.

Through his attorney, he demanded access to the ticket and a detailed accounting of the prize.

Miriam handled the legal filings.

The prize had not yet been paid, and its treatment would have to be addressed through the proper claim and marital-property processes.

I submitted the required disclosures.

I simply refused to let Mark control it through documents I hadn’t authorized.

In the middle of the proceedings, Mark sent me a photograph.

It showed him in his hospital bed.

His face was gray.
