I Was Fired From My Hotel Job After a Wealthy Guest Claimed I Took Her $5,000 Ring – The Next Day, a Security Guard Called and Said, 'You Won't Believe What She Left for You'

"I'm sorry."

"I've worked here for almost a year! You know me. I found six hundred dollars in cash under a mattress three months ago and turned it in."

"I remember."

"So how does a missing ring erase all of that?"

He didn't answer.

"I've worked here for almost a year!"

They fired me.

By the time I left the hotel, Vanessa had won without anyone proving a thing.

I got paid for the days I'd already worked that month. After daycare deductions and taxes, it wasn't enough to cover half my rent.

I walked home because I couldn't stand the thought of sitting on the bus crying in front of strangers.

When I picked up Emma and Lucy, Emma ran toward me wearing one shoe.

Vanessa had won without anyone proving a thing.

"Mommy!"

I crouched down, and both girls crashed into me. I held them so tightly that Lucy complained.

"Too much squish."

"Sorry, baby."

That night, they ate macaroni while I pretended everything was normal. After I put them to bed, I sat on my kitchen floor.

I held them so tightly that Lucy complained.

Daniel used to sit there when the girls were babies because the tile was cool and he said it helped his back.

I found myself staring at the empty spot beside me.

"What am I supposed to do now?" I whispered.

There was no answer.

I cried until my head hurt. The next morning, the same security system that helped cost me my job gave Marcus a reason to call me back.

"What am I supposed to do now?"

My phone rang just after seven.

Marcus. He worked hotel security and had become one of my closest friends there.

"Rachel." His voice sounded strange. "You need to come here. I went through yesterday's footage again..."

"Marcus, I don't work there anymore."

"I know, but you have to see this. You won't believe what she left for you."

"You need to come here."

I sat up.

"What who left for me?"

"Vanessa! Just get down here now. I can't explain this over the phone."

Twenty-five minutes later, I walked through the hotel employee entrance.

Marcus met me before I reached the security office.

"You won't believe what she left for you."

"You look terrible," he said.

"Thanks."

"I meant... never mind. Look at this!"

He opened the door and gestured me inside. I stepped into the security room and stopped dead.
