"What the heck is that doing here?" My voice rose almost to a scream. "Are you trying to get me in even more trouble?"
I stepped into the security room and stopped dead.
"Of course not." Marcus shut the door. "Like I said, it was left for you."
I found it hard to believe him.
A dog carrier was sitting on the security desk. Inside it was Vanessa's tiny white dog.
"Princess" was printed over the door.
When she saw me, her tail started thumping against the plastic. Apparently, I was the only person in this situation she was happy to see.
"Princess" was printed over the door.
I stared at Marcus.
"Look at the carrier." He ushered me closer.
A folded piece of paper had been taped across the top. FOR RACHEL THE CLEANER
"Marcus, this is insane. Why would the woman who accused me of stealing her ring and got me fired leave her spoiled dog here for me?"
"That's what I wanted to know," he replied. "So I checked the footage."
FOR RACHEL THE CLEANER
He pulled up security footage.
The timestamp showed 6:38 the previous evening, several hours after I had been fired.
Vanessa and Richard appeared near the lobby elevators.
Even without sound, I could tell they were arguing.
Vanessa jabbed one finger at him.
Richard said something.
They were arguing.
She shook her head, turned, and walked toward the lobby.
Richard stood still for several seconds.
Then he looked directly toward the nearest camera.
He was carrying Princess.
He walked through a side hallway into the service area and carried Princess into the security office. A minute later, he came back out alone.
He looked directly toward the nearest camera.
I watched it twice. My face went cold.
I wanted to scream.
"This explains nothing." I waved my hand at the camera. "And what am I supposed to do with this dog?"
Before he could reply, the security-room door opened.
Mr. Bennett walked in.
"This explains nothing."
The second he saw me, his face tightened.
"Rachel? Why are you here?"
"I called her," Marcus said.
"You had no authorization to bring a terminated employee onto hotel property."
Marcus pointed toward Princess. "You should probably worry about that first."
"Rachel? Why are you here?"
Mr. Bennett looked at the dog. Then the note.
"What the...?"
Before anyone could answer, shouting carried in from the lobby.
A woman's voice.
