My brother’s fiancée asked my grandmother to bake an enormous wedding cake, then refused to pay her for it. So I decided to give the bride a wedding gift she would never forget.

Ashley spun around when she spotted Daniel approaching through the crowd.

“Daniel! Finally! Tell your sister to stop this nonsense and put our cake back where it belongs!”

My brother looked from Ashley to me, clearly struggling to understand why his wedding reception had suddenly become a public confrontation.

“Will somebody please explain what’s happening?”

I lowered the spoon slightly.

“Grandma spent three days making this cake because Ashley promised to pay for the ingredients and her time. But when Grandma asked for the money this morning, Ashley laughed at her and refused.”

Daniel frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense. Ashley told me Grandma offered to make it as our wedding present.”

I watched his expression carefully. He wasn’t defending Ashley yet; he was genuinely confused because he’d been told an entirely different story.

He turned toward his bride.

“Ashley, is that true? Did you promise Grandma money?”
