My brother’s fiancée asked my grandmother to bake an enormous wedding cake, then refused to pay her for it. So I decided to give the bride a wedding gift she would never forget.

Ashley folded her arms.

“Fine! She mentioned wanting payment. But we’re family, Daniel. Who charges family members for a wedding cake?”

“Someone who can’t afford to spend hundreds of dollars on ingredients,” I replied.

Ashley rolled her eyes.

“Oh, please. Your sister is making a ridiculous spectacle over nothing.”

I glanced toward Grandma, who sat quietly at her table, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. She looked as though she wanted to disappear rather than become the center of attention.

Daniel followed my gaze.

“Why did you have to reimburse Grandma yourself?” he asked.

I took a breath.

“Because she needed that money to buy her medication.”

His expression immediately changed.

“Medication?”

“Yes. She explained that to Ashley this morning. She told her every dollar of her pension was already accounted for.”

Daniel turned back toward his wife.

“You knew Grandma needed the money for her medicine?”
