My brother’s fiancée asked my grandmother to bake an enormous wedding cake, then refused to pay her for it. So I decided to give the bride a wedding gift she would never forget.

Ashley waved her hand dismissively.

“She was being dramatic. Honestly, everyone is making this sound much worse than it was.”

“She was almost crying,” I said. “And you laughed directly in her face.”

For a moment, Daniel simply stared at Ashley, waiting for her to deny it or show some remorse. I could see how desperately he wanted to believe there had been a misunderstanding.

Instead, Ashley gave an irritated sigh.

“Oh, for God’s sake! She’s not going to die because she waits a few days for her medicine!”

The words seemed to strike Daniel harder than anything else she’d said.

He looked toward Grandma again. Her chin trembled as she tried to maintain a brave expression, and I saw something change in my brother’s eyes.

Ashley continued complaining about the guests staring, the ruined photographs, and how unfairly everyone was treating her. She seemed completely unaware that Daniel had stopped listening.
