My brother’s fiancée asked my grandmother to bake an enormous wedding cake, then refused to pay her for it. So I decided to give the bride a wedding gift she would never forget.

Daniel shook his head.

“My sister didn’t make you say those things. You did that yourself.”

“But we’re legally married!” Ashley protested.

“I know. I’ll deal with the legal consequences. But I’m not staying married to someone who treats my family with that kind of cruelty.”

For a moment, I thought Ashley might finally apologize. She could have approached Grandma, admitted her mistake, and shown that she understood why everyone was upset.

Instead, she looked around at the watching guests, the damaged cake, and the photographer standing awkwardly nearby.

“Do you have any idea how much money I spent making this wedding perfect?” she shouted.

Daniel stared at her for a long moment.

“Apparently not enough to pay Grandma.”

Ashley opened her mouth, but no answer came. Her face reddened as she realized that everyone had heard him.

Then she gathered the skirts of her wedding dress, turned sharply, and stormed through the barn doors, her veil trailing behind her.
