“I just wish I’d discovered what kind of person Ashley really was before marrying her. Untangling this is going to be complicated.”
Grandma’s face turned pale.
“Daniel, please don’t say that.”
Behind us, Ashley’s heels struck the floor as she hurried toward him.
“Untangling what?” she demanded.
Daniel rose and faced his bride.
“Our marriage.”
Ashley let out a nervous laugh.
“You can’t be serious.”
“I am.”
Her expression twisted with disbelief.
“You’re ending our marriage because of a wedding cake?”
“No, Ashley. The cake isn’t the problem.”
He spoke quietly, but his certainty made the words impossible to dismiss.
“You promised to pay my grandmother, then humiliated her when she needed money for medication. Even after finding out how much you hurt her, you couldn’t show the slightest remorse.”
Ashley pointed furiously toward me.
“Your sister planned this! She’s manipulated you into turning against me!”
