My brother’s fiancée asked my grandmother to bake an enormous wedding cake, then refused to pay her for it. So I decided to give the bride a wedding gift she would never forget.

Instead, I woke to voices coming from the hallway.

Ashley stood beside the enormous cake, photographing it with her phone while two men waited to transport it. She inspected every tier without offering Grandma a single compliment.

Then Grandma spoke hesitantly.

“Honey, could you pay me now? The ingredients cost quite a bit, and I need to refill my medication soon.”

Ashley laughed.

“Seriously, Grandma? You expect me to pay you? We’re family!”

Grandma looked stunned.

“But you promised, dear. I wouldn’t mind helping, but I can’t afford to cover everything myself.”

Ashley rolled her eyes.

“Stop acting poor. I’m already spending a fortune on this wedding. You’re not getting any money.”

I stepped into the hallway before Grandma could respond.

“Ashley, you explicitly promised to pay her. I was sitting right there when you said it.”

“Oh, please. It’s just a cake.”

“It’s three days of work and ingredients she paid for herself.”
