My brother’s fiancée asked my grandmother to bake an enormous wedding cake, then refused to pay her for it. So I decided to give the bride a wedding gift she would never forget.

Ashley ignored me and instructed the men to carry the cake carefully to their vehicle. Within minutes, she was gone, leaving Grandma standing in her own home with tears in her eyes.

I grabbed my car keys, ready to follow them.

“Please don’t,” Grandma whispered. “It’s Daniel’s wedding. I don’t want to ruin his day.”

Then she lowered her head.

“Maybe I should’ve asked for the promise in writing.”

I sat beside her and held her trembling hand.

“You did nothing wrong. Where are your receipts?”

She retrieved an old cookie tin filled with receipts for butter, eggs, fondant, and decorations. After calculating the expenses and estimating her labor, I counted out enough money to cover everything.

“Please use this for your medication,” I told her.

“But sweetheart, you shouldn’t have to pay.”

“I know. And that’s exactly why Ashley isn’t getting away with this.”
