My seven-year-old granddaughter found a diamond ring at the grocery store and gave it back to its rightful owner. The following morning, a stranger appeared at our front door and declared, “There’s something you need to see. And you need to see it right now!”

I crossed my arms tighter over my chest and stared him downAre you trying to take her away from me?” I asked plainly.

“What? No, absolutely not!” Brandon said, looking genuinely shocked by my question.

“You’re a rich family with expensive lawyers,” I pointed out sharply. “And I’m an old woman with a leaking roof and no money.”

“Nobody is taking anyone away from you,” Brandon swore solemnly. “I promise you that.”

“Swearing promises is cheap,” I countered coldly.

Brandon reached into his dark coat pocket and pulled out a small velvet pouch.

“Natalie gave me this to give to you,” Brandon said, extending his hand. “It’s meant for Harper.”

“I don’t want your family money or jewelry,” I stated firmly.

“Then please just hold it for her until she grows up,” Brandon requested gently as he set the pouch on the porch railing.

He turned around, walked down the wooden steps, and got back into the black SUV.
