My seven-year-old granddaughter found a diamond ring at the grocery store and gave it back to its rightful owner. The following morning, a stranger appeared at our front door and declared, “There’s something you need to see. And you need to see it right now!”

“Because we think he’s completely lying to himself,” Brandon insisted. “He’s extremely stubborn and proud. He’s carried a massive secret for years, and he refuses to tell us what it is. We truly think he wants to see Harper, but he simply can’t forgive himself.”

“So you’re doing this entirely behind his back,” I said, narrowing my eyes.

“Yes, we are,” Brandon admitted directly. “And Harper is our niece. We genuinely want to know her and be in her life, too.”

“You let all this time slip away,” I reminded him bitterly.

“I know we did,” Brandon said with deep regret. “We should’ve stood up to Dad years ago, but we didn’t.”

“Why bring a small girl to meet a bitter man who says he doesn’t want her?” I questioned strongly.

“Because very soon it’ll be far too late for them to ever meet,” Brandon pleaded gently.
