My seven-year-old granddaughter found a diamond ring at the grocery store and gave it back to its rightful owner. The following morning, a stranger appeared at our front door and declared, “There’s something you need to see. And you need to see it right now!”

I decided that I had to meet the man first by myself.

Later that afternoon, my cell phone buzzed on the counter from an unknown caller ID. I picked it up nervously.

“Hello, this is Natalie,” the woman’s voice said through the speaker. “We met at Target yesterday afternoon.”

“What do you want from us?” I asked bluntly without any pleasantries.

“Please don’t judge our family solely by what Brandon told you this morning,” Natalie begged softly.

“Was he lying to me?” I challenged her instantly.

“Not exactly,” Natalie clarified carefully. “But he doesn’t know everything that happened back then.”

“Then tell me the truth right now,” I demanded.

“I’d really rather do this in person,” Natalie urged. “I’m currently sitting in the cafeteria at St. Jude Hospital.”

“Why on earth should I trust you?” I snapped into the phone.

“You shouldn’t,” Natalie replied honestly. “Not yet, anyway. But there’s something critical about Paige and your son Ryan that you truly deserve to know.”
