Hearing my dead son’s name made my stomach drop instantly.
I arranged to leave Harper with my trusted neighbor Pat and drove straight over to St. Jude Hospital. Natalie was sitting alone in a corner booth holding a cup of coffee that she hadn’t even touched.
“You actually came,” Natalie said, looking up with surprised relief as I sat down across from her.
“Have you been following my granddaughter around?” I asked directly, leaning forward.
“Yes,” Natalie confessed quietly. “For three full days.”
“Why would you do something like that?” I demanded angrily.
“I couldn’t bring myself to actually approach you,” Natalie explained, looking down at her hands. “What was I even supposed to say to you after all these years?”
“Then what in the world happened at Target yesterday?” I asked.
“I was just about to finally speak to you in the candy aisle,” Natalie revealed. “Then I suddenly spotted Dad’s personal driver standing near the store entrance.”
