My seven-year-old granddaughter found a diamond ring at the grocery store and gave it back to its rightful owner. The following morning, a stranger appeared at our front door and declared, “There’s something you need to see. And you need to see it right now!”

“Your mama had a daddy,” I said softly, smoothing her hair. “He is very sick right now, and he really wants to meet you.”

“Is he a nice man, Grandma?” Harper asked innocently, holding her rabbit tightly.

“He is a very sad man, sweetheart,” I replied gently.

“Is he sad because he lost somebody he loves?” she asked intuitively.

“Yes, sweetheart, he is,” I said, squeezing her hand.

Natalie and Brandon were standing quietly outside room four twelve as we approached. They gave us gentle, appreciative nods as we walked inside.

Harper walked in slowly and stopped right at the foot of the high hospital bed.

“Hi,” Harper said with a sweet, shy wave.

Arthur couldn’t even utter a single word. He simply stared at her beautiful face and wept without making a sound.

After a few quiet moments, Arthur reached out with a shaky hand and picked up the soft velvet pouch from his bedside table. He held it out toward her.
