“This belonged to your great-grandmother,” Arthur told her in a ragged whisper. “It belongs to you now.”
“The treasure from Target,” Harper whispered softly as she looked at the sparkling ring inside.
“Yes, my sweet girl,” Arthur sobbed softly. “It is your treasure.”
“It stays locked in a safe box until she’s much older,” I stated clearly to Arthur.
“Of course,” Arthur agreed without hesitation.
Arthur then reached under his pillow and pulled out a thick white paper envelope, handing it directly to me.
“I’ve legally arranged a full trust fund for Harper’s education and future,” Arthur explained in a low, sincere voice. “It is Paige’s rightful share of her mother’s inheritance. I should’ve done this for her many years ago.”
I looked down at the official documents in my hands, then looked up at the dying man.
“I still don’t completely understand you or the choices you made,” I said honestly.
