“I know you don’t,” Arthur nodded, tears continuing to pool in his tired eyes.
“But I will bring Harper back to visit you every Sunday,” I promised firmly. “For her sake.”
Arthur nodded weakly, his eyes filling with profound gratitude.
That night back at home, Harper sat on her bed holding the small ring box up toward the warm lamp light.
“Grandma, was the treasure really sent from Mama?” she asked with a bright, peaceful smile.
“In a special way, sweetheart, yes it was,” I answered, sitting beside her.
“I think she really wanted me to find it in that store,” Harper said happily.
We’ve gone back to visit Arthur in the hospital every single Sunday since that day, along with her Aunt Natalie and Uncle Brandon. Harper finally has the big, loving family she always dreamed of having.
THE END.
