My seven-year-old granddaughter found a diamond ring at the grocery store and gave it back to its rightful owner. The following morning, a stranger appeared at our front door and declared, “There’s something you need to see. And you need to see it right now!”

“Her father is my father, too,” Brandon said gently.

“And the crying woman at Target yesterday?” I pressed further.

“That was my other sister, Natalie,” Brandon answered.

“Why was she crying so hysterically over a piece of jewelry?” I asked.

“It belonged to our mother,” Brandon said. “Mom always wanted Paige’s first child to inherit it.”

“Then why didn’t Paige’s child get it years ago?” I asked, crossing my arms tight.

“Dad wouldn’t give it up,” Brandon explained with a heavy sigh. “He completely cut Paige off nine years ago.”

This whole crazy story seemed utterly unreal to me as I listened on my front porch.

“And what about Natalie?” I questioned him.

“Natalie took it off Dad’s nightstand two days ago,” Brandon admitted in a low voice. “She was driving across town to bring it directly to you.”

“So she stole it from her own father,” I stated bluntly.
