I read the sentence again.
The old store.
The same place where Thomas had met Nathan.
The first business we built together.
It had been closed to customers for years, though Thomas still used the upstairs office occasionally.
I looked toward the window.
The rain was falling harder.
And suddenly, I knew I had to go there.

Nathan answered my call on the second ring.
"Margaret?"
"Did Thomas tell you about Raymond?"
A pause.
"Some of it."
"He said the truth is in the old store."
Nathan went silent.
Then he asked, "Where are you?"
"Home."
"Stay there."
"Why?"
"Because Raymond has been trying to access the company's records since your husband died."
I gripped the phone.
"He came here today."
"What?"
"He wanted me to sign away ownership interests."
Nathan swore softly.
"Did you sign anything?"
"No."
"Good."
I hesitated.
"Nathan, how much money are we talking about?"
"The trust itself is valued at approximately twenty-eight million. But the company accounts are a separate issue."
