“Really?”
“Yes.”
Then I added:
“And I would very much like to take Lucy to lunch.”
For several seconds, there was silence.
Then Julian began crying.
I heard him trying to hide it.
I smiled through my own tears.
“Julian?”
“Yes?”
“Would Saturday be all right?”
His voice shook.
“Saturday would be wonderful.”
For the first time in weeks, I slept peacefully.
But the next morning, everything changed again.
A newspaper had published an article about Thomas's estate.
The headline read:
MILLIONAIRE BUSINESSMAN'S SECRET SON AT CENTER OF $28 MILLION INHERITANCE DISPUTE.
My photograph was beside Julian's.
The article quoted an unnamed family source claiming Julian had manipulated Thomas while he was ill.
And at the bottom was a statement from Raymond.
He questioned whether Thomas had been mentally capable of establishing the trust.
I stared at the newspaper.
Then my phone rang.
It was Celia.
“Margaret,” she said, “we need to talk.”
