The Night Everything Went Silent

Our son's wife.

I took a photo.

Then a video.

I didn't scream.

I didn't cry.

Something inside me went completely silent.

My father's voice echoed in my head: "That man will disappoint you one day, Carol."

I called Daniel from the parking lot.

"Mom?" he answered, cheerfully.

"Everything okay?"

"Daniel," I said, my voice steady.

"Come to your grandfather's grave.

Right now.

I'll meet you there.

I'll show you something, and I'll tell you everything.

And then we're going to do something."

"Mom, you're scaring me."

"Just come, sweetheart."

I hung up, started the engine, and drove to my father's grave.

What did Carol show Daniel at that grave — and what did they decide to do together?
