But I couldn’t forget what I had read on the screen.
The document stated:
“Missed medical appointments. Contact with the patient established through a family representative. Urgent follow-up examination recommended.”
And just below it was my father’s phone number.
“So my father knew my mother needed medical care, but he was preventing her from getting it?”
The doctor replied:
“According to these records, your father called several times to postpone her appointments. But we need to hear his explanation before we can understand why.”
I couldn’t wait any longer.
I called my father.
“Dad, come to the hospital immediately.”
He remained silent.
Then he asked:
“Have the test results come back?”
I froze.
“How do you know we’re waiting for test results?”
My father let out a deep sigh.
“Sarah, I’m coming.”
Twenty minutes later, he arrived at the hospital.
I had never seen him look so old.
