Part 4: The Spoonful of Cake That Destroyed a Marriage
Daniel stood before the four-tier wedding cake, holding the spoon he’d taken from my hand. For several seconds, he studied the delicate sugar flowers Grandma had spent three days creating, while Ashley watched with a satisfied smile.
She clearly expected him to return the cake to its display and demand that I apologize.
Instead, Daniel raised the spoon and drove it straight into the center of the beautiful ivory frosting.
I gasped.
He dug deep into the sponge, scooped out an enormous portion of cake, and put it into his mouth. A jagged hole remained in the middle of Grandma’s carefully decorated masterpiece.
“DANIEL!” Ashley screamed. “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?”
My brother didn’t answer. He chewed slowly as the entire reception fell silent, then swallowed and looked toward Grandma’s table.
“Grandma, this cake is absolutely delicious!”
Grandma stared at him, her mouth slightly open. I couldn’t tell whether she was more shocked by his compliment or by the enormous crater he’d left in her creation.
